Spoken word learning goals

Knowledge and content:
I think that I researched a lot about Malcolm X and found out more about than I ever did tuning my dad out. I found out that the people who killed were from the Muslim society who was mad at Malcolm X for what he was doing. When I found out this fact I knew that he was resilient, Malcolm X was sent multiples threats toward him and his family he still kept going, that’s resilience.
I understand that much time and corporation. You must write down what you want to get across and then put other words to it.
If you’re going to have a beat to it then make sure that one the beat doesn’t over power your words, it not to low that you can’t hear it, the beat also has to flow or else it sounds weird, and make sure that your beat is original in a way. I also understand that you also must reach out to an audience by trying to connect different styles so you could sell more.
Presentation/ Professionalism:
My partner and I both worked hard and helped out each other but focused on two different things I did the music and he did the art. We were sort of organized but we mostly did what came natural which seemed fine and worked out great.
I didn’t feel like performing my piece in front of people live.
In my spoken word I didn’t really state historical facts but I mainly was talking about how they helped out people of all races. I also didn’t feel that I wouldn’t have been into it as much as was then if I had to use proper English.
Polished writing:
In my 100-word essay I did some errors but not many I think I went through only 3drafts mainly of careless mistakes, but overall that has to be to best paper I’ve written.
I completely forgot to state the source (wikipedia.org).

REFLECTION

I think I deserve a B on content and skills. I think I deserve a B becasue I didn't go out of my way to research and share information, but I did research and share information. I also understood the relationship between races, especially the north and south and slavery issues. I also understood about descrimination, even when there were no slaves.

I think I deserve an A on professionalism because I was very profesional and tried my best to present on Resilince Café, even though I didn't talk when we presented our spoken word. I presented my half, and Denzel presented his. It was very profesional. It was almost like we had jobs.

I think I deserve an A- on polished writing becasue I revised it, and had others revise my writing as well. It also made a connection between James Brown, and my grandfather, George Petrou. There aren't really any claims, except those that don't have any evidence, in which there was only one. I did not use any slang.

spoken word

This spoken word of James Brown and Malcolm X has a lot that I’m inspired by and hope that you are to. I am inspired by this piece because it talks about using your voice to speak up and using for good use James Brown and Malcolm X both had great voices they used in a positive matter. James Brown used his voice to bring happiness to people by singing, Malcolm X used his voice to try to end segregation and have equal rights toward all so everybody could be happy. So you see they both used their voices in good ways but in different ways. That moves me because I want to be able to say things that can change peoples lives the way did. I really want to help people out that way because what if people hadn’t used their then what would life be like, or what if people used their voice the same way Hitler did how would that effect us today. So I hope that the piece really speaks to people the same way it spoke to me.

Connection to Artwork

I think I can connect my artwork to my life because my table shows how people can be related in ideas and not just in blood. This shows that I could be related in thought to Einstein and such. What I most like about our artwork is that it shows that you can take different approaches to solving problems and this is what I want to focus on. I think that if two people are for a cause they can have a certain unity, which can make people famous and send others to prison. My grandpa for instance just made olives and liked being able to bring the joy of olives to many. Most olives are cured with lye, which is a chemical. My grandfather cures them with salt and water, which makes them tastier. Since lots of people would like to bring natural foods to San Diego, he can look at what they did and then sell more olives. This is what I think James Brown did, looked at Malcolm X and other famous people who had a good influence on him and acted out what they did.

My life and lyrics

I can relaate to lyrics I wrote because it has to do with that the only way people will listen or take you seriously is by expressing your voice. I think this will inspire people who don't really talk alot and are wondering why nobody listens to them to practice talking in front of people and still feel comfortable instead of being embarssed. I know that's how i feel.

My Life and Lyrics

I can relate to the lyrics Denzel wrote because it's about doing something you love. I can connect to this because I do things that I love. I play music and listen to music for fun because I enjoy it. That is what the lyrics are about. They also quote James Brown who is a big influence in my life because I have listened to his music alot and my dad talks about him alot too. James Brown just recently died and I was sad because I thought he was coming to San Diego.

tribute

When you love doing something that you love
don’t stop or let anyone say you aint good enough
Malcolm X and James Brown did just that
both doing something they love
both trying to bring joy toward all people
both living life by the way they feel is right
one on the mic. and the other on the quaran
you see that sometimes not using your voice can cause pain and suffering toward the people that you love
imagine a world were you don’t have a voice nobody would listen because they don’t care
be glad that you have a say
be glad that people do listen to you
be glad that you can be free to use your voice the way you want
express yourself use your voice freely

“when i’m on stage i trying to do one thing, bring people joy”
“education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”

Studio Time

I have accomplished only a little bit on Friday's studio time. Me and Denzel have been working on the lyrics. I have made a table with my uncle and I will have it by Tuesday, already primed. That's really all.

3D Artist

An artist that inspired my idea (a painted table) is Michelangelo because he painted a magnificent painting on a ceiling, so why couldn't we paint a table. I also think the style of renaissance is my favorite so that inspired me too. My idea is a painted table with one side for Malcolm X and one side for James Brown and having their songs and speeches put next to them. There were also going to be bars in the middle since they've both gone to prison. The only constructive criticism I got was from someone who clearly hadn't read my blueprint since they told me that I should label if Malcolm X or James Brown were singing or talking so people don't get confused. The funny thing is that was the first thing I wrote down so I feel, as my 3D artwork idea must be ok. I don’t think I need any more criticism though. I think this is a solid idea and will work.

James Brown Quote

“When I'm on stage, I'm trying to do one thing: bring people joy. Just like church does. People don't go to church to find trouble, they go there to lose it.”

5 W's of James Brown

Who: James Brown, a famous musician known as the Godfather of soul and an African American activist. He was a talented singer and dancer and has gone to jail alot for beating his wife and drug related problems.

What: James Brown launched his music career and made it. He also has been sampled alot and many famous Black artists have included samples of his lyrics in their own music.

When: James Brown was born on May 3rd 1933 in Barnwell, California. "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business" launched his music career in 1953. He has been famous since the late 1950's despite having to go to jail many times. James Brown died recently, on Dec. 25th 2006.

Where: I previously mentioned James Brown being born in Barnwell, California and most of his music was released in the Americas. He also worked around California, mostly in Barnwell. He danced for soldiers and shined shoes. Once he became famous though, he was seen all around the world, mainly in the U.S.A. preforming. He died in Atlanta, Georgia.

Why: James Brown is really famous for going to jail more than enough times (around 12) for drugs, assualt, domestic violence, unauthorized weaponry, theft, and high speed chases. He was trying to be a boxer or a baseball player but injured his leg which led him to music. His name was supposed to be Joseph but got mixed on his borth certificate. James Brown was also famous for believing in Black people's rights. He always stood up for poor African Americans everywhere. He also went to many demonstrations for poverty and preformed for charity. He was like John Lennon but for black people.

Connection: I think James Brown and Malcom X are strongly connected because even though James Brown was a Musician and Malcom X was a Muslim minister, they both were activists on African American behalfs. James Brown fought with music and Malcom X with words. They both went to jail alot too. Malcom X started his ideas in a jail cell and James Brown started his first famous band in a reform school after going to jail. It's almost like they were brothers, but Malcom x would say they were.
